How are you guys doing so far this holiday season? I was away for a week at my parents house and they fed me - TOO well! I'm back on track right now, and upping the intensity of my workouts for the next couple of days.<br />
Here are some recommendations for you as you finish out the holiday season:<br />
<br />
Drink a TON of water. Aim for a gallon a day.<br />
Add 100 KB swings to all of your workouts from now til New Years Day.<br />
Get some extra rest if you can - go to sleep a half hour to an hour earlier. Proper sleep helps steer away sugar cravings.<br />
Speaking of sugar - give it up NOW and allow yourself to have it only on your NY's Eve festivities.<br />
Give it up again the next day as part of your NY's Resolutions!<br />
Make sure you workouts are a little extra tough the next couple of days.<br />
Stretch your muscles properly at the end of every workout. This will help prevent soreness and soreness can impede your workouts. You want to be able to keep up the intensity right now.<br />

Farmers walk right hand - 50 steps<br />
Repeat on left hand side<br />
Single arm overhead carry on the right - 50 steps<br />
Into a single arm racked carry - 50 more steps on the right<br />
Repeat on the left hand side<br />

Repeat 2 more times for 3 rounds. Go HEAVY.<br />
You can also use double KB's for the above routine.<br />

Perform 100 Mountain Climbers.<br />
Do 1 Sun A followed by 1 Sun B, plus a warrior 2, plus half moon.<br />
Perform 10 Burpees followed by 10 jump lunges (each leg).<br />
Practice an arm balance of your choice.<br />
Repeat the Burpees and jump lunges. <br />
Practice 3 different variations of side plank.<br />
Practice some backbends and hip openers.<br />

Also, I have a week's long worth of workout challenges for you guys to try. These are not workouts in themselves, but rather a challenge you can add onto your workouts each day. <br />
<br />
<strong>Day 1: Squat Tabata Challenge:</strong>4 minutes of work - 20 seconds 'on' followed by 10 seconds 'off' for a total of 4 minutes.<br />

Perform bodyweight squats for 20 seconds, during the 10 second 'rest' hold in the bottom position of the squat, repeat for a total of 8 rounds = until the 4 minutes is up.</div>

<strong>Day 2: Plank Challenge:</strong></div>

Get into a forearm plank and hold for 30 seconds, go to right side forearm plank for 30 seconds, back to center for 30 seconds, left side for 30 seconds, back to center for 30 seconds - without ever letting your knees touch the ground, <em>then</em> lay down on your belly and lift up into superman pose and hold for the last 30 seconds. Takes 3 minutes!</div>

<strong>Day 3: </strong><strong>Pull Up Challenge: </strong><div>
Try and do 30 pull ups throughout the day. Do 1 here, 3 there, etc, throughout the whole day. Don't worry about the time between sets. Just do a random few here and there throughout your day. </div>

Don't have a pull up bar? use a broomstick between 2 chairs, or do the door knob version. Can't do pull ups? Do assisted ones with a chair underneath you, or jump up into the pull ups.</div>

<strong>Day 4: Is a bodyweight hip thruster challenge.</strong> How many can you do before stopping? These make my glutes BURN like nothing else. Try to do 100!</div>

<strong>Day 5:</strong> <strong>Handstand Hold Tabata</strong><div>
Kick up into a handstand against a wall, hold for 20 seconds, rest for 10 - using the tabata protocol.</div>

If you cannot do a handstand, do an elevated plank with your feet on a table or half way up the wall, on your bed, etc..... </div>

Great for shoulders, triceps and core work. </div>

<strong>Day 6: Kettlebell swing challenge</strong>. Try to do anywhere between 100 and 200 swings without stopping. </div>

<strong>Day 7: Yoga Lunge Challenge: </strong>Get into crescent lunge and hold for one minute, then immediately get into standing frog and hold for one minute, back into crescent lunge - other leg - and hold for one minute. Adjust your stance once again and immediately get back into standing frog and hold for one minute. 4 minutes of static holds on the legs is harder than it seems. Then finally straighten your legs and come into a wide legged forward fold and hold the stretch for one minute. </div>

Give this one a go. I did it this morning - my first day back from vacation. I did workout while I was on vacation, but no heavy lifting as I couldn't travel with heavy weights! I did bring my KB, jump rope, resistance band and pull up rings. I also did 10 pull ups while away. :) <br />

Usually I like to have a plan for my workouts. I typically follow a program for a month trying to get better at the exercises as each week progresses. Then in a month I change it up. I stick to a lot of basics - push ups, pull ups, deadlifts, squats, lunges, presses and the like, but will change the variations or tempo or reps. <br />
But sometimes I just like to go through a round of exercises just because. <br />

My favorites - <br />
<br />
Jump rope (1 minute)<br />
Swings (20) <br />
Handstands (1 minute practice) <br />
Jumping Lunges (20 or 10 each side)<br />
Push ups into side plank with leg lifts (10 total)<br />
Ball Slams (20 slams)<br />

You can change the times and reps if you want. <br />

It is called the Elevator rep challenge. I can't wait to try it. It is a new way to challenge your muscles and a great alternative if you do not have heavier weights or available or if you don't feel like going as heavy. <br />
<br />
Basically you do the rep 1/2 range of motion, 3/4 of the way, and then 100% of the way. That's one rep. Repeat for desired # of reps. <br />
